 Layyah:death toll from toxic sweets rises to 17
LAYYAH: One more person affected of toxic sweets has died on Saturday in Layyah, rising the death toll to 17 including seven brothers, ARY News reported.
The deceased seven brothers include Rizwan, 28, Irfan, 25, and Shahbaz 8.
The incident took place in the city of Karor Lal Essan in Layyah District.
Police have arrested owner of the shop Tariq and his brother Khalid. Police registered case of attempted murder against them, while Tariq has been shifted to undisclosed location for further investigation.
A worker on the shop, Amir, has also been included in the investigation. Khalid said he did not know what poisonous thing got mixed with sweets as he had prepared sweets as regular.
A man, Umar Hayat, had bought the sweetmeats on the occasion of birth of his child. However,  happiness quickly turned into a tragedy when the sweets turned out to be poisonous.
Police reached the scene of the incident and later raided the sweets shop. They collectd a sample which was sent for laboratory tests and sealed the shop till further investigations.
Three people who had become extremely unwell after consuming the sweets were shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan, while the rest were discharged by the District Hospital Layyah after first-aid was administered to them.
